Unique Aboriginal artwork specs

Jukurrpa Designs has launched a collection of eyewear inspired by unique artwork created by Aboriginal artists in remote Central Australia.

The collection took nearly three years to create, designer Murray O’Keeffe told National Indigenous Times. He hopes the Australian public will support the brand, which is about more than just the frames. “I really want to show the world, starting with Australia, just how beautiful the artwork is and just how amazing these artists are and the story behind the artwork.

O’Keeffe said he has been fascinated with Australian Aboriginal artwork and culture since he was a kid growing up in Ireland, watching the ABC series Bush Tucker Man. Optometry has been in O’Keeffe’s family since 1880 and he said the motivation for designing the frames wasn’t just about his passion for optics, but his desire to give back to the Indigenous community and the country he now calls home.

The collection includes eight styles corresponding to specific pieces created by artists working at Warlukurlangu Artists, one of the longest-running Aboriginal art centres in Central Australia. Every frame comes with a custom-made case, a cleaning cloth featuring the artwork and a card detailing both the artist and the story behind the original work.

From each frame sold, 10% of profits go back to the Warlukurlangu community.
