wearable display system to allow surgeons to maintain a more comfortable position during surgery is anticipated to be commercially available by the end of this year. The result of a partnership between Kopin Corporation and HMDmd, the head-mounted technology will deliver high-resolution real-time information such as video images from a camera in the surgical field, diagnostic images and patient-specific data.

We have considered applications involving integration with an exoscope or microscope, which would include ophthalmic surgery. We believe that using a wearable display provides substantial ergonomic benefits to the surgeon in allowing constant eye-to-anatomy contact without being locked in a specific head position,” said HMDmd CEO John Lyon. “We have already demonstrated a concept version of the display system to surgeons and prospective distribution partners and have received a very positive response from the market.
