Johnson & Johnson Vision is rolling out its much-anticipated Acuvue Oasys With Transitions Light Intelligent Technology contact lenses in the US and Europe.
The first of its kind photochromic contact lens adapts to changing light conditions and was named one of Time's Best Inventions of 2018. J&J research showed wearers experience up to 43% faster photostress recovery and squint 38% less on average, improving their ability to read road signs at night when driving, compared with transparent CL wearers.
The US roll-out is being fronted by US baseball celebrity Bryce Harper, but there are no dates yet for the Australasian roll-out, said Kara Peterson, J&J’s US-based senior manager, communications. Given the harsh sun in this part of the world, the new Transitions lenses are not intended to replace sunnies, added Peterson. The lenses have 100% protection against UVB rays, but other parts of the eye and surrounding areas will still be exposed to UV light, so wearers should still don sunglasses when out and about.
