Russian technology company Rostec has unveiled Blue Sky pro, prototype anti-insomnia glasses it claims will prevent sleep disorders and restore circadian rhythms.

“The glasses will definitely be of interest for individuals suffering from insomnia or regularly challenged by jet lag because of business trips, “said Rostec executive director Oleg Yevtushenko. “At the same time, they can also benefit servicemen, including pilots, helping them to recover more rapidly.”

Blue Sky glasses radiate light at a wavelength that mimics sunlight from 6-10am and 2-6pm. Exposure to the light prompts the wearer’s body clock to switch from night-time to daytime, said Yevtushenko. “The product makes it possible to get rid of drowse in the morning and to ‘postpone’ sleep until approximately 11pm. It should be worn for half an hour per day during the indicated time intervals to completely restore sleep-wake cycles.”

The glasses can also be used to help reset the body’s internal body clock when changing time zones and could be useful to tackle depression, neuroendocrinal diseases and impaired concentration, said Yevtushenko.

Commercial production of 15,000 pairs of glasses is planned for 2022.
