Mojo Vision’s augmented reality (AR) contact lens, featuring motion tracking and a pinhead-sized LED display that superimposes graphics on the wearer’s vision, has begun in-eye testing.
The first to test the prototype is Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins, who said he’s been wearing a single lens for an hour at a time, although the aim is to eventually pair lenses for an overlaid 3D display. The lens contains micro-batteries, a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, plus a radio-frequency link to a neck-worn relay for computer processing. So far, Perkins said he’s tested an onboard compass, watching the green display change from north to south as he turned around, but there are plans to integrate night vision and object-sensing, which the company said could help macular degeneration patients.
Mojo Vision, founded in 2017, stated it will seek FDA approval for the lens, which, if successful, will retail for around the cost of a high-end smartphone.
