Drs Baswati Sahoo and Shira Sheen have joined Eye Institute in Hawke’s Bay, doubling the local team.
The Hawke’s Bay practice has been growing rapidly under the guidance of Drs Liz Insull and John Beaumont, said Eye Institute surgeon Dr Nick Mantell. Having Drs Baswati Sahoo and Shira Sheen join the team supports further expansion and shows that Eye Institute remains committed to providing high quality eyecare to the people of the Hawke’s Bay. “Our aim is to provide expertise in all subspecialties, with support from our experienced team in Auckland. With that in mind, we are pleased to welcome Drs Sheen and Sahoo. Both are working in the Hawke’s Bay ophthalmology department and bring extensive international experience with them.”
Dr Sahoo, a retired airforce officer from India, is a trained cataract and glaucoma surgeon with 14 years’ work experience in India and Abu Dhabi. She said the diverse work culture and the vision to embrace innovation is what attracted her to join the Eye Institute team. When not busy at work, Dr Sahoo said food, travel and music is her happy place. “I love to travel and indulge in different cultures and try their food; I pride myself on my culinary skills. I also enjoy music, Bollywood in particular, from ghazals* to Indipop, I love it all!”
Dr Sheen is a cataract and anterior segment surgery specialist who moved from Australia to Hawke’s Bay in 2020 to take up a position with the ophthalmology team at the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. She said she is very lucky to be part of a great team at Eye Institute, working with friends. Prior to moving to New Zealand, she worked alongside Associate Professor Michael Goggin, University of Adelaide, where she gained experience with premium intraocular lenses and published several articles in peer-reviewed journals. “I am excited to offer my services in my subspecialty area of cataract and refractive surgeries, optimising visual outcomes using the very best in lens technologies.”

Dr Sheen loves spending time with her three children. “I feel so privileged to live in this beautiful country. We are enjoying exploring New Zealand and trying to see and do as much as we can.”
