Glaucoma New Zealand (GNZ) has appointed Shubhneet Nanda as clinical educator to manage its newly launched Sightwise patient education and support programme.
Previously a relationship manager with Auckland Eye, Nanda brings a valuable combination of clinical and business skills, said GNZ general manager Pippa Martin. “Shub is perfect for the role as she is an optometrist with experience from establishing a new programme, extensive networks within the eye industry and a passion for improving patient knowledge.”
Nanda said the role holds personal significance as she has close relatives at different stages of their respective glaucoma journey. “Witnessing their experiences, I’ve come to understand how vital it is for patients to feel supported and informed beyond the clinical setting.
“Each individual’s journey is unique and, what struck me most, is how empowering education can be. I wanted to be part of something that provides people with more than just medical facts – a source of ongoing encouragement, clarity and reassurance. That’s exactly what Sightwise offers,” she said.
Nanda said she is looking forward to working closely with optometrists, ophthalmologists, GPs and pharmacists across the country to raise awareness about GNZ and encourage referrals to the Sightwise programme. “Together, we can help ensure that every New Zealander diagnosed or being monitored for glaucoma feels equipped, empowered and never alone in their journey.”
When not busy running the Sightwise programme, Nanda enjoys working as a locum optometrist. “It’s a great way to explore different clinical environments and connect with diverse communities,” she said, adding that outside of work she’s a keen gardener. “Growing beautiful hydrangeas and edible plants brings me a lot of joy!”
