Matthews Eyecare has appointed Michael Cochrane as its new chief executive, replacing owner Phil Matthews, who will step down to focus on his strategic governance role on the company’s board.
With extensive operational experience across healthcare sectors and health insurance in Australia, Cochrane is well placed to head New Zealand's largest privately owned independent optometry group, said Matthews. "This has been a significant decision for the Matthews family. As a third-generation family business, stepping back from day-to-day operations and passing the baton to a new chief executive hasn't been undertaken lightly. We are confident Michael has an affinity with our values and the leadership skills and experience to navigate Matthews Eyecare into the future."
Returning from Australia with his wife and two children, Cochrane will formally take up the position in Nelson on 12 December.
Established in 1957, Matthews comprises 20 optometry practices, employing 140 people.
