Resolution of DED reduces migraine severity

Researchers in Australia found successful dry eye disease (DED) treatment with ocular lubricants also diminished migraine severity in susceptible patients.

Investigators at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales and Prince of Wales Hospital conducted a randomised, double-masked, crossover trial with 24 participants with both migraine and DED. Patients received either Alcon’s Systane Hydration UD or NeilMed saline eye drops four times per day for four weeks each, with a two-week washout period between treatments, said researchers.

Writing in Optometry and Vision Science, researchers said when migraine and DED coexist, successfully treating DED reduces the severity of migraine, as measured by the Headache Impact Test 6.
