A new emoji is being proposed to change the image of glasses wearers from geek to chic.

A social media vote on four options provided a winning image – a smiling face with modern black frames – to be put forward to the emoji powers-that-be for its next release of characters.

The campaign was run by Specsavers in the UK. Social media manager Lucy Abbott said, “The only emoji icons with glasses as it stands are the geek and granny, which is just not representative of modern culture. Glasses have become a key fashion statement, so we want to celebrate this with a new emoji.”

This year, a guide dog and a service dog were added to the emoji range, as were a man and a woman using white canes. Specsavers hopes the new stylish specs-wearing icon will be introduced in next year’s emoji release.
