Cookie policy
This page explains the cookies and similar technologies we use on nzoptics.co.nz. For the broader picture, see our privacy policy.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device so it can remember things between visits — for example, that you're logged in, or that you've dismissed our healthcare-professionals disclaimer. We also use a few related technologies (localStorage, a tracking pixel in our newsletters) for the same purpose.
The cookies we set
Necessary
These are required for the site to work. You cannot turn them off through the banner; turning them off in your browser will prevent you from logging in or submitting forms.
- payload-token — session authentication for logged-in members. HTTP-only, expires after 7 days.
- nzoptics_disclaimer_accepted — remembers that you've acknowledged our healthcare-professionals disclaimer.
- nzoptics_consent — stores your cookie-banner choice so we don't ask again on every page.
Analytics (consent required)
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles readers find useful. Cookies fire only after you accept the Analytics category.
- _ga, _ga_* — Google Analytics 4 client identifiers. Lifetime up to 24 months.
- _gid — Google Analytics session identifier. Lifetime 24 hours.
- Resend tracking pixel — a 1×1 image embedded in our email newsletters that tells us which editions were opened. Pixel loads only when your email client downloads remote images.
Marketing (consent required)
We measure how our advertisers' campaigns perform on the site (impressions, clicks, frequency). We do not sell your data, build advertising profiles, or use third-party retargeting cookies.
- Google ad signals — when this category is on, we send the ad-related Consent Mode signals (ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization) to GA4 so the campaign-measurement reports work for our advertisers.
First-party ad-events tracking
Independent of cookies, we record when an advertisement is shown or clicked on this site. The record contains the ad ID, the placement slot, a timestamp and your IP address. The IP address is hashed (one-way) within 48 hours; the aggregate counters are kept indefinitely for advertiser reporting. This data stays first-party and is not shared with any third party.
How to change your choice
You can change your cookie preferences any time. Clear the nzoptics_consent cookie in your browser settings and reload any page — the banner will appear again.
EU and UK visitors
If you're visiting from the EU or UK, the banner shows you a "Reject all" option alongside "Accept all". No analytics or advertising signals fire until you make an explicit choice.
